church built on the spot where it is believed that Jesus met with his disciples and cooked them breakfast after the resurrection.

by the Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee also has deep significance for the men who lived near there and made a living fishing in its waters.  When Jesus calls his first disciples he is calling them away from their livelihoods, from what they have known, and from how they expected to live out their lives. Jesus calls them and tells them that they will now become fishers of men.  After the resurrection Jesus comes again to the beach on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. This time the disciples did not immediately recognize him. The most touching scene occurs in this story in the conversation between  Jesus and Peter. As they are sitting by the charcoal fire Jesus has used to cook them breakfast he asks Simon Peter three times "Do you love me". If we think carefully, the last time Peter was around a charcoal fire near Jesus he was denying that he even knew Jesus. This was was not a shaming by Jesus but an opportunity for Peter to seek forgiveness and true reconciliation from Jesus. That's they key. Reconciliation isn't just about saying we are sorry for our sins. It is about seeking to restore the relationship that was broken. It's only then that the relationship can get stronger and move forward.
