Fahter Alex has given me permission to "lift" from his blog and post here so I will be doing some of that.  To backtrack a bit, this is what he had to say about Church of the Nativity:

 The Church of the Holy Nativity is believed to be the exact spot where Jesus was born. Inside and underneath the Church is a cave with a star on top of the spot and then just turn around and you see the exact manger believed to have been used by Joseph and Mary to hold Jesus.

This is where the Son of God chose to be born, not in great palace but in a cave.
