We then, as a group, boarded a bus and drove about 14 kilometers outside of Jerusalem to one of several possible sites for the Road to Emmaus (photo above), a lovely post-resurrection story in Luke. The story features two of the disciples who are walking heavy heartedly away from Jerusalem on Easter Sunday when a stranger joins them. They talk and then ask the stranger to "stay with us, for it is evening and the day is nearly over" -- and the stranger abides with them and when he breaks bread, they recognize him as Jesus. We walked a rural path together in silence to commemorate this event.

We then visited an 11 century Crusaders' church(photos above), where the Knights Templars set up shop, now run by French Benedictines and then had a final eucharistic service together at a French convent, before heading back to Jerusalem. I returned to St. James Armenian Orthodox Cathedral for a thoroughly Medieval Vespers service, chanted by young Armenian seminarians presided over by Armenian Monks in spooky robes with pointed hoods -- one last encounter with a Christian Church of the East, with their very different liturgies and tradtions.

I finished my pilgrimage where it began last week and this same morning, at The Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Ben, one of our hosts at St. George's College, brought us into some heretofore undiscovered nooks and crannies iincluding a first century crypt.

Our group boarded a bus for Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport. All of us cleared the very stringent Israeli security and are now in a very shlocky Israeli food court, where a McDonald's Happy Meal exhausted all my shekels (and ran about $11).

It's been a terrific trip.

Dan

The tomb where Jesus spent his last night at Caiphas'

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 72px; height: 96px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XXxZ9DZ3F90/Td21bFegRWI/AAAAAAAAAW8/QyDHn3G7MZk/s400/Tomb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610840187704722786" />

...last days.  ~Dan Searby

One last missive -- for the religious and history buff, The Holy Land is a bi-fecta. Add Jesus and you have the Trinity-fecta.

Yesterday, we had a free morning. Went to the Church of The Holy Sepulchre for an early Mass -- inside the ante-room of the tomb. Some good walking around East Jerusalem -- a very non-confrontational group of Palestinians just going about their every day business -- live and let live ethos. They are a lovely people and it is nice to see the other more hopeful side of the Arab street.

We went to a very ancient Syrian Orthodox Church after lunch that claims the site of The Upper Room -- site of The Last Supper, two post-resurrection appearances ("Peace be with you"; and the wonderful testimony of heretofore doubting Thomas -- "My Lord and my God!").. Session led by a Syriac Orthodox Nun who testified to the miracles she has seen including appearances from Jesus. We went down to the Upper Room -- many of the historical sites are beneath today's levels as we tend to build on and over older sites. Upper Room, particulary with the Syrian set-up, was appropriately mystical.

We went on to the Church of The Dormition, site of The Blessed Mother Mary's passing. They also had a competing Latin site of the Upper Room (things can get confusing in the Holy Land) and to compound the historical gyrations, the site of King David's Tomb was right next door. Can't vouch to the historical accuracy -- we were told that the Israeli government seized a church by imminent domain (hope I spelled this correctly -- Bruce -- if you are out there...). The site itself is rather shabby and quite unbefitting of the greatest King of Israel -- a velveteen curtain and a half finished room with exposed electrical fixtures and two Orthodox Jews keeping prayer vigil.

We went on to The Church of St. Peter Gallicantu, the site of the High Priest Caiphas' house, where Jesus was brought after Gethsemane, imprisoned and where Peter denied the Lord three times. There is a modernist Church -- lots of those in The Holy Land, and a lower crypt that gives every impression of a jail, replete with carvings into the stone for shackles. It felt very real and there are steps up to the house from the Mount of Olives that date back to Jesus' time.

We had a lovely sung Eucharist in the Cathedral of St. George's as preparation for the next morning. The Anglican Cathedral and its surrounding gardens are very much a piece of England in the Holy Land.

This morning, we got up as a group quite early for the Stations of The Cross. We started at 6 am from the College of St. George in East Jerusalem and carrying a large cross, tried to be unobtrusive and non-triumphant as we walked through Arab East Jerusalem and through Herod's Gate. Once we entered the Old City, I distinctly heard the crowing of a rooster -- others in our group said they heard it crow three times. We started at the first station, where Jesus was brought before Pilate. We each took a turn doing a reading and then carrying the cross and made our way to Calvary and The Church of The Holy Sepulchre. It was quite solemn and powerful. We largely had the Old City and Via Dolorosa to ourselves. As a new arrival to Catholicism, it was my first Stations of The Cross. The stories and visual images are off the charts powerful -- Christ meeting his Mother Mary along the way -- falling down three times -- poor Simon being conscripted by the Romans to carry Jesus' cross. The pathway is quite narrow with inclines and sharp turns. Being there takes you there.

We had an incongruously hearty breakfast at a spiffy Lutheran Pilgrim Center right next to the the Church of The Holy Sepulchre, which came out of a nice land deal the Germans made with their WW I allies, the Turks, who then controlled Palestine before the Brits took control after WW I. We then went into Holy Sepulchre and lined up with a large Jordanian-Californian pilgrim group. We were allowed to enter the tomb itself in groups of four which was a very special experience. We also went upstairs to the site of Calvary and The Holy Cross -- mixing the sequence as we had gone to the tomb first, but richly experiencing what are arguably the two most important sites of Christendom.

We split into small groups after this and had a nice lunch at Abu Shukri, where Frommer's and Simon Montefiore (Brit Historian) says the best hummus in Jerusalem is found. After lunch, four of us were able to get into the Armenian Orthodox Chapel of St. James for Vespers and when the Cathedral is then closed to the public. One of our hosts from St. George's, Ben (see his picture back at the beginning of the postings), was friendly with a high ranking priest, Father Emmanuel ("God with Us") who gave us a behind the scenes tour of a site founded by James, the Greater, the Lord's Brother (though the Latin Church disagree on this genealogy), James was the first Bishop of Jerusalem and also the first martyr among the Apostles. There is a chapel where his head is enshrined (he was sadly beheaded). A very special highlight was being invited into the monastery by Father Emmanuel for tea and a long conversation. There were two lovely young ladies that were with us through Ben's auspices -- these "English Roses" were probably why we were given the behind the scenes tour.

We wound up back at St. George's and had a nice reception and our graduation ceremony this evening. We had some post dinner fellowship and discussion -- we have been christened "The Brotherhood of the Cross" (though I suggested the more Tolkienesque "Fellowship of the Cross"). Tomorrow we wrap up our pilgrimage with the post resurrection "Road to Emmaus" and fly home that night.

Here comes some personal reflections -- thus far, have disappointingly not had any great epiphanies or mystical moments. At the same time, it has been a most peaceful journey, atypical for someone who is a somewhat nervous, certainly hurried traveler (remember Chevy Chase at the Grand Canyon in "Vacation"? -- "o.k., we saw it, let's go!").

While the mountaintop moments have largely been lacking -- even, ironically on Mount Tabor, site of the Transfiguration, I will be able to carry this journey with me the rest of my life. Never will any reading or sermon be filtered in the pre-pilgrimage way. Perhaps it is like childhood Christian education -- you don't fully appreciate it at the time but it lies in store and is drawn upon and there as you go through life -- our "Bread for the Journey".

Most importantly, the trip confirms my belief. The audacious claims of Christianity -- Virgin birth, wondrous miracles, resurrection -- they unfold here in the traditions, landscape and shared belief held by millions of diverse peoples of all races and nations, experienced over tens of hundred of years. It is all true.

Pilate asked Jesus, "Quid est veritas?"

Jesus, the Son of God, stayed silent -- characteristically restrained. He who had all power and authority, never misused his power and authority. This pilgrimage has confirmed my faith and belief. It is all true.

Thanks be to God.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre ~Laura

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 96px; height: 72px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zly2CdS8KQE/Td0kuZ2W3TI/AAAAAAAAAW0/wgwBJTsp-7Y/s400/angel%2Bcrying%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610681090404965682" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RDsF3sr13NM/Td0kuebduXI/AAAAAAAAAWs/JEcQ_p7Ltsk/s400/angels%2Bcrying%2B3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610681091634346354" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 96px; height: 72px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kJINeOunvt4/Td0kt3yjjYI/AAAAAAAAAWk/V7YgJpASbQk/s400/angel%2Bcrying.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610681081262214530" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 72px; height: 96px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VW5Kru_lL5Y/Td0ktqJiYtI/AAAAAAAAAWc/58XO5TmzaII/s400/Place%2Bwhere%2BJesus%2Bwas%2Bprepared%2Bfor%2BBurial.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610681077600510674" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 72px; height: 96px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-80BFbRVbY3I/Td0ktp8s3TI/AAAAAAAAAWU/Ax88MlMoLdY/s400/Golgatha.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610681077546671410" />

Pictures are all from inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre:
Jay kneeling at the site of Jesus' crucifixion (you feel through a hole to the stone); Laura (from last year) praying at the site where Jesus was prepared for burial - the scent is amazing because people pour scented oils onto the marble slab, and right near and above these two sites, I was overwhelmed with this beautiful mosaic that pictured angels crying over Jesus. The plaza is open only short periods of time. Security is tight. Christians are not allowed inside the shrine.

Info about the Dome of the Rock:
The most famous Islamic site in Jerusalem is the Dome of the Rock (Qubbat as-Sakhrah). An impressive and beautiful edifice, the Dome of the Rock can be seen from all over Jerusalem. It is the crowning glory of the Haram es-Sharif ("Noble Sanctuary"), or Temple Mount.

The Dome of the Rock is not a mosque, but a Muslim shrine. Like the Ka'ba in Mecca, it is built over a sacred stone. This stone is believed to be the place from which the Prophet Muhammad ascended into heaven during his Night Journey to heaven.

The Dome of the Rock is the oldest Islamic monument that stands today and certainly one of the most beautiful. It also boasts the oldest surviving mihrab (niche indicating the direction of Mecca) in the world.

History
The sacred rock over which the Dome of the Rock is built was considered holy before the arrival of Islam. Jews believed, and still believe, the rock to be the very place where Abraham prepared to sacrifice Isaac (an event which Muslims place in Mecca). In addition, the Dome of the Rock (or the adjacent Dome of the Chain) is believed by many to stand directly over the site of the Holy of Holies of both Solomon's Temple and Herod's Temple.

The Dome of the Rock was built by the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik from 688 to 691 AD. It was not intended to be a mosque, but a shrine for pilgrims. According to tradition, the Dome of the Rock was built to commemorate Muhammad's ascension into heaven after his night journey to Jerusalem (Qur'an 17). But there seems to have been more to it than this, since the Dome of the Ascension was later built nearby....

For further information: http://www.sacred-destinations.com/israel/jerusalem-dome-of-the-rock

WOW WOW WOW

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1rxKHfuBJ_k/Td0bOCba_sI/AAAAAAAAAWE/_c_8vyETrU8/s400/%2521cid_falalalalalalala444109397.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610670638757510850" />
Began the day at 6AM walking the Stations of the cross. Incredible to know that Jesus walked that route to redeem the world. And as Father Hedman says to "...claim his prize," every single one of us! Goose bumps.

After stations, we went to breakfast then to the Church of the Holy Sepulcre. We went into Jesus' tomb where His body lay for three days until he was resurrected. AWESOME. I was in the tomb and prayed on the rock he way laid on. Or at least what they say is the one. Then we got to touch the rock face the cross Jesus hung on was standing on. So amazing.

From there it was free time. I went with team Crouse and Dan and Peter M. to the Dome of The Rock. It was big. And there is a lot of land up there. It was an interesting feeling being there.

From there I went out on my own. I wandered Old Jerusalem and took in the atmosphere. Today being our last full day I wanted to make sure I got a well rounded perspective on the current climate among the citizens of Israel. The college has offered several opportunities for us to learn about the political climate, but I felt we were hearing mostly the Palestinian side of things. So I introduced myself to a group of four very well armed Israeli police officers.

At first they ignored me. So I just kept standing there waiting to engage them. Finally, I politely interrupted their conversation. I was greeted with a, "what do you want?" I explained I just wanted to talk to them for a few minutes. Three of them were sent away by their superior and he stayed to talk to me. I asked him about what he thinks of the current situation. He said "right now I am wearing my uniform so I cannot talk about politics." I prodded deeper, and got a lot of information from him. Basically his perspective is that all the problems are not based on religion but on poverty. The people who live in impoverished areas according to him are the ones who start all the trouble. He believes the walls are good because they keep out people with criminal records, not just because it prevents bombs. And he said that he is an officer of the law and no matter who you are if you break the law he will arrest you and if you are being harmed he will help you. It was an awesome conversation, I can't spell his name but he used to work in the intelligence division for the army and now is a police officer. Seemed like he had some clout too.

What a cool day!

Chris

Church of the Holy Sepulchre ~Pete Mogavero

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yetUaumYRws/Td0Z5wUt_yI/AAAAAAAAAV8/mgLl_k2rFnM/s400/Holy%2BSepulchre.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610669190788546338" />
A view of the church of the holy Sepulchre (sp?). Then a lecture about the political climate of Jesus' times. Father Kamal gave the lecture and it was fantastic!

We then had the rest of the morning free. I decided to take some time and read reflect and fall asleep. This afternoon we went to Saint Marks Syrian Orthodox Church. One of the sites that is said to be where the Last Supper took place. It felt very authentic. There was an icon there painted by Saint Luke, the same Saint Luke who wrote the Gospel According to Luke! The nun there told us that since she has been there (12 years) she has witnessed 7 miracles take place near that icon. Very cool stuff.

From there we went to Ciaphas' house where the Pharisees tried Jesus. There was a beautiful church built on the property. We began in the church upstairs, moved to the next level, and then to the lowest level, the dungeon. That dungeon held Jesus the last night before He was crucified! Also Paul, Peter and James were all probably held in that dungeon. Not just held either - scourged. We went into the lowest cell where Jesus may have been held. It was incredible to touch the walls he leaned on, and to stand in the place I'm sure he prayed for the people who were about to kill him. Amazing.

We came back to Saint George's, and Father Fred celebrated the Holy Eucharist. Father Hedman gave an incredible sermon. Not only did it shake you right down to your soul (in a good way) but the love and emotion he has for God came through in a beautiful, and tangible way. I have throughly enjoyed getting to spend time with Father Hedman.

Tonight Father Kamal will talk to us about the way of the cross, and then from 9PM on we will remain silent.

So sorry Kate - can't talk tonight. I miss you and love you all. I can't wait to see you all again. On Wednesday morning, at 6, we will leave St. George’s College, where we have been staying, and head for the ancient part of Jerusalem, only about a 10 minute walk away. There, we will experience the pinnacle of our pilgrimage: The Via Dolorosa. Starting at the place where Jesus was condemned to death, we will then go to 13 other locations along the route our Lord took to the cross, ending at the place of his burial, over which the Church of the Holy Sepulcher has been built. Of course, we at the Church of the Redeemer are familiar with the Stations of the Cross, but what will be unique about this is that we are experiencing them at least very close to the actual places where they occurred.
This pilgrimage has been an incredibly wonderful experience for all who have participated. We have visited the places of the Annunciation in Nazareth, the Nativity in Bethlehem, the Temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, the changing of water into wine at Cana, the Sea of Galilee, and the Dead Sea, just to name some of the highlights. On Sunday, by the way, while we were traveling back to Jerusalem by bus in the afternoon, it occurred to me that it was morning at Redeemer, so we stopped for a moment and remembered our parish family as many of you were gathered for the Holy Eucharist.
Our pilgrimage to the holy Land has been a great blessing to the men who were able to take part. I am grateful to God for this opportunity. It has been a great time for renewing my faith and for learning more about the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I look forward to seeing you all in a few days as we gather once more on the Lord’s Day.
In Christ,
Fr. We sadly left lovely Galilee. Such a peaceful and beautiful place. The water and mountains in always make for very nice real estate -- Galilee brings to mind Palestine's equivalent of Scotland.

Jesus could not have been too happy when he had to leave blessed Galilee -- where he was the local hero, for intrigue filled Jerusalem. It was also a very long walk -- that modern prophet Google says about 68 miles. Jesus sure did a lot of walking and we are covering this trip in a comfy bus which is still tiring.

We left Galilee and drove south to Mount Tabor, the site of the Transfiguration. It's a pretty good sized mountain and again, no small feat to hike up it -- we went by local taxi which provided a NASCAR like experience with narrow hairpin turns. Two monasteries up top, one Greek and the other run by the blessedly hospitable Franciscans, who play the dominant role in maintaining Holy Land sites -- though the Orthodox are always right alongside and often closed except by special arrangement Spoke to a Franciscan Brother from Quito Ecuador -- serendipitously named "Angelo" -- who let on that his group has no contact whatsoever with the Greeks. This is sadly a pattern that repeats itself -- turf wars over the Holy sites -- there have even been Monk brawls in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and a Moslem family is entrusted with the keys.

We had a Mass on the Mountaintop (in a small Chapel in the Church) and then drove down for a long trip along the fortified Jordan River Valley to Jericho, a West Bank Palestinian town that proudly advertises itself as "The Oldest City on Earth".

After lunch, walking the 2500 year old ruins, and some mandated shopping (tour guides steer us to Christian shopkeepers and evidently get a cut), we returned to Jerusalem Sunday night. We had a lecture by the Anglican Priest in charge of the Arab Christian Community who provided a nuanced and moderate view of the current political situation. Suffice it to say that Christians in the Middle East are fairly down on the Israeli leadership and are pro Palestinian.

Monday morning mass at St. Anne's, a French Monastic order built on the site of the pools of Bethesda (!) where Jesus healed the crippled man (John 5:1: "Will thou be made whole?"). Not another person there for this early morning experience and then a Mass in the Church, in French led by a Haitian Priest, with two other European Priests, six Haitian seminarians and five European Nuns. French harder to follow than German but the Eucharistic portion was translatable.

Morning excursion to the top of Mount of Olives where Jesus came down from on a donkey on Palm Sunday and entered Jerusalem. We walked down the small mountain/large hill with a lot of other pilgrims with Jerusalem's walls ahead of us. We tarried a nice while at Gethsemane, a garden with the oldest olive trees in Palestine and a lovely Church built on the site where Judas betrayed Jesus and Jesus was arrested.

Walked back thru the Old City to St. George's College. Afternoon activity was a trip to Yad Vashem (from Isaiah -- a "memorial and a name"), the Holocaust Memorial. Powerful history very thoroughly documented. Large group of Germans (they are ominpresent in the Holy Land) -- who appeared sullen and contrite.

Back to the Old City for some more walking -- Greek Catholic sites, Coptic sites (built by Constantine's wife Helena, 4th century), Russian Orthodox sites with much homage to dead Tsars who where patrons of the Russian Church and grabbed a prime spot next to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Saw Russian Nuns for the first time -- dressed like Florence Nightingale and not at all flirty.

Tomorrow early for Mass at Church of Holy Sepulcher and to the Upper Room, site of the Last Supper and Pentecost.

Feeling blessed,

Dan

~Dan Searby (I am basically stealing these off of an e-mail - Laura)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9unP65BPeq4/Tdra-OIWdRI/AAAAAAAAAU0/iKVCOB8pAkc/s400/Israel%2B2011%2B069.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610037048323241234" />
Hello, hello from the Sea of Galilee. Actually a very lovely lake and maybe Israel's version re a mix of Switzerland and Northern Michigan.

We went early to the Church of the Nativity in Palestinian controlled territory. Incredible shaft of morning sunlight coming through a near empty church and we were the second group into the grotto where Christ was born. Was quite powerful.

Long bus ride after this past the spot on the Jordan River where Christ was baptized ("This is my Son, the beloved, with whom I am well pleased") -- now an Israeli border security zone and no disembarkation allowed -- and up to Bethlehem which is now distressingly traffic packed. Very large Catholic Church of the Annunciation where Mary met the Angel Gabriel and wonderfully set in motion the events that changed the cosmos. Mary had a front and center role all day.

We drove from Nazareth thru Cana down to Galilee and are staying at Pilgerhaus --- a German Benedictine community with incredible views of the lake, smart Bauhaus design and almost a Hofbrauhau social aesthetic (complete with the large steins of brau).

Tomorrow the Galilean ministry. Forget who said this, but the concept is that the Holy Land represents the fifth Gospel. You experience and relive the word of God in a very authentic, universal and timeless sense.

Dan

~from last week - but a cool account ~Dan Searby

Greetings from the Holy Land. Trip over was uneventful and we got to Jerusalem last evening. Staying at the Anglican College of St. George in East Jerusalem, 5 minutes from the Damascus Gate and the Moslem Quarter of Old Jerusalem. Good group of men, mostly from Sarasota, FL. Two Episcopal priests in tow and a staff at St. George's leading our sessions that includes three other priests.

We took a long walk last night into Old Jerusalem with the highlight being a distant view of Gethsemane and the Mount of Olives. Told it is very safe, particularly in groups, but somewhat spooky walking thru the Arab Quarter including an Arab cemetery with either locals or soldiers shining spotlights at us. We wound up at the American Colony Hotel and had a much deserved pint of beer.

Got up early this am for a Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (shared by Catholics, Orthodox, Coptics and Armenians). The Mass was actually celebrated inside the tomb -- not a big crowd given the 5:30 am early hour. Was able to briefly get into the tomb itself. May have been too tired and discombobulated to fully appreciate it so no out of body/mystical experience. Other highlights are a rock where Jesus was lain after being taken down from the cross (La Pieta?) and a Coptic Tabernacle inside the Church where there is yet another rock where Jesus laid his head.

We have a class lecture this am and then head to the Western (Wailing) Wall. Feel very blessed to be here.

With love,

Dan

Monday - Part II ~Chris Wood

After lunch and a brief break, Pat, Fr. Fred and I went to the old city! It was soooo cool to just explore on our own. We went to The Holy Sepulchre. Church of the Redeemer Lutheran. The acoustics in there made Father Fred jealous!

Then we went to John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. There was amazing art in there. We spent a lot of time exploring the amazing iconography.

Then we were able to catch the end of Vespers at the Armenian Church Saint James. The service was very pretty even though I had no idea what they were saying. On the outside they had an Icon of Jesus and God The Father crowning Mary the queen of heaven! Father Fred and I agreed Redeemer needs one of those!

We headed back to Saint George's after that. We have completed our official day today. The rest of today is free time for us to do what ever we want.

We started today going to the Mount of Olives! We began our walk down into the garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed, sweated blood, and was betrayed by Judas. From the top of the mountain you can see the gate Jesus entered from on Palm Sunday. You can also see where Ciaphas' house, where Jesus was tried by the Jews, you can also see the upper room, which is the location of the last supper. In that landscape you can almost imagine all of it transpiring right in front of you. It was awesome.

The church located in the garden was very cool. It was incredibly dark. The mood in the church is meant to be meditative and sad almost. We also saw the site of Mary's tomb, where most of the eastern churches believe Mary was assumed into Heaven. Take that Father Marsden! Mary's tomb was incredible the icons in there were magnificent.

Pat Firzgerald, Father Fred, and I are all going to go to the old city now and explore. I hope I can keep up with Father Fred - he walks like a jack rabbit runs!

More tonight!

~Garland Pollard

J. It is good to be back at Saint George's College. We went to Mount Tabor today. Mount Tabor is where people believe the Transfiguration of Jesus took place. It was a short trip from the Sea of Galilee. The trip up the mountain was intense! We had to get off the bus because the road had so many curves. If you get carsick easily it would have been rough. Especially the way the driver was taking the hairpin turns. Yikes.
On top of the mountain was a beautiful church. We Celebrated the Holy Eucharist in the Moses Chapel. Then spent some time exploring the rest of the Church. The Church was very nice - it was definitely a "mountain top" experience! There were ruins attached to the church. They were neat but not as neat as Capernaum.

From there we went to Jericho. Jericho was neat. We did some shopping and then came back to Saint George's. Tonight we will hear from a Palestinian priest who will tell us about the peace process from the Palestinian point of view. I am looking forward to it!

Message from Joan Falls

Hi there, Laura, Wow you are doing a super job communicating to "the Pilgrims." It is exciting to view all their experiences, happenings and profound thoughts. For some reason when I sent my communication, I don't think it went through. (SO WHAT IS NEW) This technology is super, but computers try my patience. In the event the guys didn't receive mine, I'm sorry. I just want them all to know they are in my constant thoughts and prayers. My experience was led by Father Fred & I believe we were a group of 19 in March of '98. It was truly a trip that affects our lives spiritually and never to be forgotten! Keep up your good work! God Bless you all! They have Mount Tabor (see pictures below - I got a little mixed up on my churches! sorry!), shopping in Jericho and heading back to Jerusalem tomorrow. I spoke to Jay this morning and they had a wonderful day and were resting this afternoon before a dip (in Jay-speak: a "polar bear") in the Sea of Galilee. I heard everyone went in yesterday. Jay said the weather has been spectacular! He said everyone is doing really well with only minor snafus with a missing suitcase and miscommunication on when to be on the bus - but things seem to be running smoothly now. Jay is so honored to be leading this fine group of men on this amazing spiritual journey. Since the first time he went two years ago, he has dreamed of this day when he is able share this extraordinary experience. He is overwhelmend with how the Spirit is moving within the group.

Something else they got to do yesterday was to renew their baptismal vows in the Sea of Galilee....unforgettable.

Don't miss the reflections below.

Star and Bucks???     ~Pete Mogavero

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VOb7wo46mmA/TdhOWVlNGfI/AAAAAAAAAUU/0UkC6F_kuBI/s400/Pete%2527s%2BNestle%2Bpic2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5609319481547233778" />
Look very closely......
I guess there are no trademark infringements to worry about in Bethlehem, Palestine...inside the westbank.

This was just outside the church of the Nativity...where Jesus was born in a grotto/ manger.

Shalom,
Pete

...the gospel has truly come alive today! ~Chris Wood

While in Israel we have heard the Holy Land referenced constantly through the Fifth Gospel. Totally amazing! My favorite however was Capernaum.
Capernaum reminded me of ruins that you would see on the History Channel. There was a temple there that I most definitely believe Jesus taught at. Incredible! It became increasingly more apparent that this WAS the town that Jesus spent his time in.

The Primacy of Peter was also awesome. The church looks huge from outside but it was actually quite small. It was neat to hear that Pope John Paul celebrated there in the year 2000.

In the location of the Sermon on the Mount, we got to experience being one of Jesus’ followers first hand. We all sat on the hillside and Father Hedman went down the hill and across the street to read the Beatitudes. He was probably 50 yards away and he could still be heard so clearly! It was amazing! I have always pictured Jesus being on top of the hill but because the hill is like an amphitheater, he must have preached from the bottom for everyone to hear.

I must say that the gospel has truly come alive today!

Thank you for your continued prayers,

Chris

A Reminder

If you are just now having the pleasure of reading this blog detailing the amazing journey of our Redeemer Pilgrims, I just wanted you to be sure to click on Older Posts at the bottom of the page, so you can read reflections from the first days.

Reflecting   ~Nancy Boyle

Thanks so much for doing this, Laura.

I went with the Eikers and many others on this same pilgrimage some years ago. Morning Mass at a German Benedictine Monastery where the rock where Jesus multiplied the fishes and loafs lay. Service in German but somehow translated and felt familiar.

Next stop was Mount of the Beatitudes, a lovely Church built on the hlllside where Jesus gave his "Blessed are the (poor, peacemakers, etc.)" remarks to 5,000 people. Church was built in the 30's by that great pilgrim Mussolini. We hiked down the mountain to the lake to the site where John's Gospel ends (try reading it). It is after the resurrection and the disciples are back fishing on Galilee, missing their friend. As they approach the shore, they see a man crouched down, cooking fish over charcoal. John recognizes Jesus and good old impulsive Peter tears off his clothing and dives in the water and swims ashore to Jesus. Here Jesus asks Peter if Peter loves him -- he asks Peter this three times which is the same number of times that Peter denied Jesus at his arrest. Jesus then charges Peter with tending his flock -- the rock where this happens is know as "Peter's Primacy" -- which is why the Popes are considered the successors to Peter and why we should all be good Catholics today.

After renewing our baptismal vows at the water's edge, we had a lunch of Galilean grilled fish, walked the ancient and archeologically significant town of Capernaum -- where Jesus stayed with Peter and Peter's Mother in Law (where Jesus provided the ultimate housewarming gift and healed her sickness) after leaving Nazareth. We wrapped up the day with a boat ride on the lake.

There is a road leaving Capernaum called "Stella Maris" -- "Way bv the Sea". It goes back to Isaiah's time (1000 BC) and today's road out of Capernaum lies on the same trail. It is a near certainly that Jesus walked this same narrow road that we walked today. Seeing these sights...wow.

Love,

Dan

Nazareth and Church of the Annunciation there.

<img style="display:block; The boat is floating on the Sea of Galilee - pretty gorgeous, huh?

The maps: find Jerusalem, a bit south, you will see Bethlehem, over the border into the militarized zone. Heading north from Jerusalem, you will see Nazareth. And on farther north, you will see the Sea of Galilee (remember it is really a lake). Pilgerhaus is situated at the northernmost tip of the Sea of Galilee. One can see the town of Tiberius from the seashore at Pilgerhaus. It is beautiful with twinkling lights at night.

Tomorrow, they get to go see Peter's home in Capernaum, visit the amazing Mount Tabor - the place of the Beatitudes (I think) and eat some St. Peter's fish.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 225px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8NcJDRDwEaI/TdcPu9JwHwI/AAAAAAAAATk/eNFpDYDsado/s400/map3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608969160277106434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 138px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9gvfCVjswLc/TdcPu6qgGSI/AAAAAAAAATc/ki0NWwgVy5Y/s400/map2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608969159609162018" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 288px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1SpIcgfnmUU/TdcPuq0O_LI/AAAAAAAAATU/34QaEIcbins/s400/map.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608969155355016370" />

George Williams sums it up!

Thank you Laura....I am not too computer savvy, but let me tell you - through the world, this trip has done the world for my spirituality and is helping to keep God in the centre of my world. As Chris said they started the day going to Bethlehem which is a ways outside of Jerusalem. We have a romantic vision of a stable and a manger filled with hay when the actual site is more like a cave or a room made out of naturally placed stone.

The guys have a two-night stay at Pilgerhaus, which is considered a resort on the Sea of Galilee, which in reality is a beautiful lake. It is a nice, pretty, seaside hotel with a beautiful bar on the beach. I called earlier and the group was celebrating Eucharist down on the beach before dinner. It may be a little more difficult for your loved ones to stay in touch here because internet is sparse.

They will sleep well with the cool breeze off the water and the quietness will be a welcome change from hearing the Muslim call to prayer from loud speakers mounted on the street corners in Jerusalem (which can be heard loud and clear at St. George's).

Pilgerhaus - Tabgha Guesthouse
Owned by the German Association of the Holy Land, based in Cologne, Pilgerhaus is a major Catholic pilgrimage site where Jesus’ miracle of the multiplication of the fishes occurred

Bethlehem and more!    ~Chris Wood

Wow, today was amazing! We began the day going to Bethlehem. We went to the Basilica of the Nativity. This is where Jesus was born! We all got to touch the ground Jesus was born on. It is so interesting to understand the true meaning of "inn." The proper translation is closer to family room. So Jesus was born in the basement because there was no room in the family room. Wow totally new outlook on that!

From there we went to the Jordan River. We were not allowed to leave the bus because it is a military zone.

From there we went to Nazareth. We went into an amazing, huge church that stood over the original site of Nazareth. This may have been where Jesus was raised. I was able to sit down on the bottom floor of this two story church and listen to the mass being celebrated in Spanish. It brought tears to my eyes - the Holy Spirit was definitely present. Awesome!

After the church we shopped and the came to the Sea of Galilee. This is an amazingly beautiful hotel. We swam in the sea today it was a little "cold" but all got in. Can you believe we swam in the sea Jesus walked on?

Chris

....this is what Jay has time to write :)

Thanks for your prayers. It will b hot in the desert...but Israel is way coooool.

Your brother in Christ,
Pete

A few other pictures.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-V4ZKA4YVgw8/TdWuL48FLaI/AAAAAAAAAR0/Vz4SW3fpShA/s400/My%2BRoom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608580430245997986" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yltJnfWXxeI/TdWuLptxncI/AAAAAAAAARs/TE4StSPoYUE/s400/View%2Bfrom%2BMy%2BWindow.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608580426159463874" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--CmOGfU3uqo/TdWuLqA5WVI/AAAAAAAAARk/GdOZiNt_bqk/s400/Spices%2Bat%2Ba%2BMarket.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608580426239662418" />

The above pictures are of a very typical, yet amazing, spice market. The desert overlook where Jesus sepnt forty days is a beautiful and majestic place. Jay said the weather is spectacular which makes it even better! On to Masada which, as Chris said below, was one of Herod's palaces. In 70 A.D. when the Romans were invading Jerusalem and taking all of the Jews to be their slaves, a group of JEws headed out of town and climbed up the mountain (in the middle of the desert) to this uninhabited palace/fortress. It was built with some amazing technology to have drinking water, cisterns, and complex systems to sustain a community for an unlimited time. Roman found them out there and struggled to get to them. They ended up building a huge ramp - which took a couple of years at least. The Jews chose not to be taken alive and when the Romans finally gained access, they found all of the Jews dead, by their own hands. They even have found the lots with the names of the last few members of this community - presumably to choose, who would kill whom in the end. The current motto of the Jewish military is - Masada, never again!

Qumran is the caves where they found the scrolls. Apparently it was a shepherd who was going after a sheep who had wandered off who actually found thes scrolls hidden in a cave.

And the Dead Sea is a unique experience. Due to the high salt content, you can't sink - you perpetually float. Last year, a man was showing off by reading a newspaper while floating in the water.

I will post some pics from our trip last year of these sites but I can't wait to see the pics of our guys!

Jay asked me to specifically ask all of you to pray for the group. He feels that because he has such a strong cadre of Christian men, who are already having an amazing God-filled experience, that Satan might be tempted to wreak havoc. Especially because tomorrow begins the time of Jesus with their day starting in Bethlehem.

May God bless our pilgrims, keep them safe and continue to spark their hearts and minds with His special and Holy places.

#3  ~Chris Wood

Hey everyone,

Today we did a lot. Again! We began the day by having breakfast, and then heading out at 8AM to the desert. Forgive me, I forgot the wire I need to transfer the pics to the computer! But we were actually looking out over the "wilderness" Jesus was in for forty days! It is a tough, rough place I would not want to even spend one day.

We Celebrated The Holy Eucharist overlooking the wilderness. Which really is just a desert. We could see temptation mountain in the distance. This is held to be the site Satan tempted Jesus. WOW!

After that we went on a very long ride to Masada. If you do not know the story of Masada look it up because it is too long to type!

Masada was one of Herod The Great's palaces - the ruins are on top of a mountain. My name tag blew off my shirt and down the mountain. Ah well.

After that we went to Qumran. This is where the dead sea scrolls were found. WOW again. We saw the caves (from a distance) the scrolls were discovered. We also got to view an excavated site the Jewish sect lived in who owned the scrolls.

From there we went to the Dead Sea! I floated, Kate would be proud! Heater, the warden of the college, bet 10,000 sheckels to anyone who could swim. I did! She owes me money. I will bring it up with her later. Being in the Dead Sea is indescribable. If you want to know what it is like - you have to go to Israel! When you get out your skin feels oily.

It has been an amazing day. I am off to shower. Love you all

Chris

Report Numero 2    ~Chris Wood

Hey all,

I can't begin to tell you all I saw today. We took a bus to the "mountain of evil intentions" which was Solomon's house. He built lots of idols there for his wife that's where the name comes from.

From the roof of the house we were able to see all of Jerusalem! We actually saw where king David's temple used to be and where he would have seen Batheshba bathing. WOW WOW WOW!!

From there we entered the walled city. We stood near the steps Jesus threw out the money changers. Then went into the city itself.

I went to the wailing wall and put two prayers into the wall. That wall is all that is left of the second temple. There were so many devout people praying and rocking on the wall because that is how they unify with their spirit.

Then we walked around the city in 3 person groups. We ended up in a merchant area. I bought a little trinket for M.J.

There is so much more I can write but I don't have the words to express all I saw. I feel like a computer about to over heat because I just can't process how much I am seeing.

This is amazing. That's 4:28 your time. The good news is I am totally worn out and ready for bed. But just in case I am going to take either 2 Tylenol PM's or 2 Benedryl (SP?). Tomorrow we have morning prayer at 7:30 AM, Breakfast at 8 and then a lecture by Father Kamal Farah at 11. Then we go to the old Jerusalem, and the western wall. We will walk back to the college.

The College is right next to the Cathedral. Very pretty. Father Jim and I are already trying to figure out to do some kind of night time tour!

We will hear the Islamic call to prayer from the minarets 5 times a day. It's not too bad a sound. Less than I thought it would be.

Keep up the prayers for us as we will for you all. We can feel them. I love you all very much!

Chris

Jerusalem!   ~Philip Crouse

When I got to Israel, I was first struck by the dustiness. Everything had a bit of a yellowish hue. We arrived at 6PM in Tel Aviv and convened at the airport. There was a lot of excitement in the group and everyone was ready to get started. We boarded our bus and got to St. George's as night enveloped Jerusalem. Other than a quick walk in the old city and a beer at the American Colony, we kept it pretty low key on the first night.

Our first full day in Jerusalem was jammed pack with action. We started the day with a great morning prayer led by Father Fred. We grabbed some breakfast at the college and then I went for a short walk around the college to check out the area surrounding the college with a few folks. I found a couple of interesting items on the streets. Firstly, there were multiple carts that were selling what seemed to be oversized bagels. I didn't grab one, but will certainly get one before heading out. I also found a spice shop, which sold dried fruits and all kinds of spices - pretty cool. We headed back to the college for a short Jerusalem 101 talk with Father Kamal our course director. He sped through 4000 years of history masterfully over the course of 60 minutes and we were off to lunch and an afternoon adventure in the old city.

We grabbed lunch at an interesting French convent. The food was delicious and views of the city were spectacular. Then Father Kamal led us to the walls of the old city to provide us a little more context. He left us at the waling wall where we were instructed by our course organizer and all-around good sir, Jay Crouse to break into teams to go and explore the four different quarters (Christian, Jewish, Armenian and Muslim) of the old city. My group got the Christian section. Naturally, we headed straight for the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. On our way, we grabbed some snacks and took in some of the charm of the city. I was really amazed at the juxtaposition of the reverence and emotion of the holy sites and the commercialism of an active city. It was very unique. These feelings were further stirred when we went into the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Frankly, my experience at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was overwhelming. The incense billowed out of the doors. When I walked inside, I was surprised at the vast amount of decorations adorning the different structures. It seemed a little less thoughtful than other cathedrals or religious spaces that I had been to. In addition to the loudness of the decoration, there were many people who were hysterically praying. I found myself taken aback at first. We would discuss later on how this was a very natural western reaction to eastern religious culture. We only had enough time to look around briefly and we were quickly back on the busy streets of Jerusalem. We walked through the markets and out of the city back to St. George's. The day wrapped up with a great Eucharist led by Father Fred, a tasty dinner and some cards. We all hit the sack to rest up for the days to come.

Tight Security - Philip Crouse

"Follow us," they said, and took me to a neatly tucked away cubicle with two chairs. I sat down in one of the chairs that she directed me to and chuckled to myself. I had heard security was serious on this airline, but this was getting ridiculous. After a barrage of questions (Where do you go to school? What do you study? Isn't finals week this week? What is your girlfriend's name? How long have you been dating? When did you decide to go to Israel? Why are you going to Israel?), I thought that I was in the clear. That was before the airline representative took me to the cubicle. She came back after a few minutes and explained that she was going to have to hold onto my carry-on items until an hour before the flight was to leave. At that time she told me that I needed to come back to pick up my bags and then they would accompany me until I boarded my flight. Sheesh! I hadn't gotten this type of treatment since I was traveling by myself when I was eight years old. However, I knew that rocking the boat would not help the situation so I thanked her kindly and went to find the nearest coffee shop.

I returned to my bags two hours later and sure enough the airline employee led me and another lucky passenger through security and to our gate. At that point, I asked if I could plug in my computer. She allowed it, but would not let me sit a few seats away to charge it! Fortunately, I was able to stretch my cord far enough to move close enough not to stir any trouble. Our flight began to board shortly thereafter and I got on as soon as possible. In retrospect, I guess my story was sufficiently suspicious: a young student traveling with a group of men from all over the country on a religious pilgrimage. I will have to rethink that on the way home.

A Pilgrim - Dan Searby - reporting in:

We are having a terrific time. After Philip's pretty intense grilling by at security in New York, we all made it over to Israel and joined up at the airport. Yesterday was an incredible first day -- hard to believe what we did in just 24 hours. Took a nice walk in the morning with the Crouse brothers, Philip & William (who reminds me of Harry Potter) and the generous and funny Indiana Peter (Mogavero) who is single handedly trying to revive the Palestinian economy with his purchases of dried fruit and nuts and even well crafted ceramics. We had lunch at a French convent outside the walls of Jerusalem whose rooftop provided an incredibly sweeping view of all of the City's topography -- from King David's old ruins (where he looked down on Basheba in her bathtub!) to the Mount of Oliver, Gethsemane, Caiphas' house (where Jesus was first tried) to Calvary.

We walked the architectural ruins outside the old wall and then prayed at the "Wailing Wall" the last intact section of the original Temple. We split into four groups and each toured and reported back on one of the Old City's quarters -- Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Armenian. We had the Christian Quarter and spent most of our time in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (I had been there for Mass that morning). We touched rocks where Jesus had lain after being crucified and a rock where the cross was itself.

Today we go to the mountain citadel Masada and for a float in the Dead Sea. It's our chance to become desert hermits, albeit for a very short while.

Your husband has done an absolutely magnificent job and is a joyful and intelligent presence.

All the best,

Dan

Linda Robinson reporting in:

Tommy let Fred talk with me via SKYPE on his computer. I am going with the adage: No news is good news :) Also, just so you know, there is a 7 hour time difference, which makes it difficult to find the right time to call home. It is 4:40 in the afternoon here, so it is 11:40 pm there - they are probably out cold from travel and a busy day!

They had introductions, a group photo and a lecture this morning. Then they took a tour around the area, ending at a beautiful Abbey high on a hill overlooking the old city of Jerusalem. Most surprising to me was the drink machine as you walk in the door stocked with beer! I have posted some pics above of the Abbey and the view from the rooftop. What will amaze the men is how contained Jerusalem is. You can see most of the old city from this vantage point.

They also have a visit to the Western Wall (formerly known as the Wailing Wall) on their agenda. This is a common site for Bar Mitzvahs. It is Men Only at most of the wall and the women can go to a smaller portion of the wall. Security is tight because of this being such a Holy site for the Jewish people. Mothers, sisters and aunts, hang over the wall and take pictures of their son going through this important passage to adulthood.

The young man above is Ben who Jay was delighted to see back at St. George's. He is a witty young Englishman that is a lot of fun. He was heading back to England last year as his Visa had expired. This beautiful wood carving is of the Holy Mother and Jesus. He bought it on our travles with him and he LOVED it so much, we kidded him that with his statue - the three of them made of the Holy Family :)

Tomorrow - Masada!!

All the men have arrived and are accounted for!

I just heard from Jay. It was 11:20 there - way past his bedtime, so the conversation was short. He said the travel went without a hitch (except for Philip's situation - see below). After a St. George's dinner, they took an impromptu walking tour around the area which includes Old Jerusalem. Then some finished the night off with a nighcap at the American Colony Hotel up the road.

Tomorrow is a big day so I'm sure they headed to bed for some serious shut-eye.

Jay is impressed with the new faculty members and has enjoyed seeing the ones we both know from previous visits.

More when I hear something.

No word yet....

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FG36M2QMB8Q/TdKUDx2fvBI/AAAAAAAAAO8/LZZ9fj9WIoU/s320/the%2Bboys%2Bchristmas%2B2008%2B2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5607707278672116754" />
....our Redeemer Pilgrims should have arrived in Tel Aviv a short time ago and are probably on their way in a sheroot (sp?) - a.k.a. a bus - to Jerusalem to get setled in at St. George's College. I spoke to our son, Philip, about midnight last night, who was traveling on an Israeli airline from New York. People say this is the safest airline you could ever travel because security is so tight! Well, Philip saw that in action. He said he was treated as a "security breach/V.I.P." - which scared me, of course! My boys have learned to tell me about their scary escapades AFTER they are out of danger! Anyway, upon check-in, I guess they didn't like the look of Philip and asked him a lot of questions. Then, they took all of his stuff which they later returned. Then he was escorted to the gate and escorted onto the plane before anyone else! He never felt any danger and actually kind of liked the royal treatment, I think.

I'll check back in when I hear they have made it to Jerusalem. Let us know if you hear anything!

p.s. Philip is the one in stripes.

More Pics

<img style="display:block; Nine men left Church of the Redeemer at 2:30: Father Fred Robinson, Jay Crouse - trip coordinator and Pilgrim leader, William Crouse (our 22-year-old son), Chris Wood (Redeemer's youth leader), Peter Gray, Tommy Williams, Pat Fitzgerald, Harold Freeman and Joe Carlton. We picked up Father Jim Hedman, literally on the side of the road in Bradenton! The airport check-in went without a hitch and the guys should be touching down in Atlanta very soon. There, they will meet up with the midwestern continfent, Pete Mogavero from Indiana and MArk Sanders from Illinois. From Atlanta, they will head out for Tel Aviv. Dan Searby and Philip Crouse (our 27-year-old son) will leave New York at midnight and George Williams will arrive in Tel Aviv from Canada via London. Pray they all meet up just right!

A friend of Jay's sent the following prayer that I thought you might like to be praying as well:
I pray God’s blessings all around for the men heading to Israel. I pray a rich journey for all of them, a more intimate awareness of God's voice, and renewal of spirit, including expectancy for all God is now moving each Pilgrim into. I pray for open hearts, eyes, ears and minds for the men. I pray that God will reveal himself beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. I pray safe travel and safekeeping for the group throughout their journey. In the name of our dear saviour, Jesus Christ, AMEN

I hope all the men will feel free to contribute their thoughts/feelings/experiences here on the blog for all of us to share in this grand adventure. I will keep you updated with what they are up to and what Jay tells me specifically.

God bless all of you at home too!!
~Laura Crouse
